BEHealSy: PhD Programme in Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems

The BeHealSy PhD programme is designed to create a new generation of student entrepreneurs who have the ability to develop innovative devices and services for a healthier Europe. This programme combines strong scientific education, training in entrepreneurship, learning-by-doing pedagogy and mobility schemes.

About the PhD programme

The PhD Programme in Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems (BEHealSy) is designed to equip doctoral students in engineering with multidisciplinary research skills in health systems and the ability to translate research outcomes into innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives.

Nine biomedical engineering universities and several industrial partners collaborated to develop a strong, unique curriculum that addresses the need for personalised health solutions on all levels – from the cellular through organismic to systemic.

The BEHealSy programme is based on the solid ground of two EIT-Health funded M.Sc. programs: CEMACUBE, formed by six universities to train students in innovation and entrepreneurship in Biomedical Engineering, and MTIH, which builds on the programmes of five universities to offer a federation of Master’s programmes in biomedical and health engineering.

Graduates from these, and other degree programmes providing exposure to training in a non-academic setting, will be further trained in applying innovation and entrepreneurship skills to the research of personalised healthcare solutions.

Structure of PhD Programme

BEHealSy is aimed at PhD students already enrolled at a university on the year 2 or 3 in case of a 5 years’ program.

The mobility module includes of 3 major components:

  • Mobility and placement: industrial visit and industrial mentoring as well as mobility at a partner university.
  • An internship at one of the partner universities, and/or through clinical, SME or industrial placements. During their internship students gain broader experience of real-life working environments and learn additional methods that will aid their research.
  • Dissemination and commercialisation of research results and knowledge: Close collaboration between the partners will bring the research knowledge outputs to industry and other scientific researchers. Examples of activities: Focused themed research symposia, discussions on research visions and research needs. Creation of innovative products, real-life solutions, new business models and business opportunities all constitute long-term outcomes of the programme.

Career prospects

After successful graduation from the host university the students will be encouraged to take their ideas and prototypes futher down the innovation path by applying to EIT Health E-labs and/or Bootcamps and other programs to accelerate Business Creation.
